I have been photographing humans the past 1.5 years. I love my job so much but the funny thing is, it doesn’t even feel like one. When it comes down to it, any photographer can send good photos, but I want to do more than that. I want you to be able to leave your heart and soul wide open so I can capture those intimate, and authentic moments.
Meet Markus and Mirella. The two of them met in high school in one of their classes. They became part of the same friend group until, a year later, they were more than friends. Markus decided to ask her out and in his own words he shared with me, “I’m just glad I decided to make the best decision of my life.”
These two traveled long and far to elope at White Stallion Ranch on horseback in Tucson, Arizona. They came from their home in Finland where they live their lives together.
We connected through instagram when Markus was on the search for their photographer. I remember on the call how excited they both were to start planning their Elopement at White Stallion Ranch. Mirella was drawn to the fact that I had shot with horses before and that my work was very adventurous and romantic. I could tell through our video call that Markus and Mirella were madly in love and so ready to be married.
Once we finally connected, in person on their wedding day, it was even more clear that these two were soulmates. Their elopement was intimate amongst the Saguaros and mountains of the desert bordering Saguaro National Park. They rode around on horseback before their ceremony and got married on the horses as well. It was romantic, unique, and pure magic. I believe the horses knew of the special moment they were a part of that day.

If you think you have to get married on foot, you definitely don’t! And this elopement proves it! Mirella grew up riding horses and has always had a deep love for them. When she told Markus she wanted to get married on the horses, he thought she was joking! But, she most definitely wasn’t. Why not get married on horseback?
This was one of my first intimate elopements I had done and I just loved the unique approach these two had.
After some initial portraits of the horses, I had them get on and ride around the property before their ceremony to have an intimate moment together and calm their nerves before the big moment. There is something so peaceful being on the back of a horse that you just can’t find anywhere else. Not long after they began their ride, the officiant arrived and it was time to GET MARRIED!
We opted to do it in front of the biggest saguaro we could find. Markus and Mirella stood on either side of the cactus, on horseback, with the officiant in between them. They spoke their vows to each other in their home language, Finnish. Unfortunately, I didn’t understand them but what I was witnessing was a passionate love that had been curated over many years. I could tell that these two really are soulmates and that I was witnessing one of the most special days in their story.
After exchanging their heartfelt vows in Finnish, the newlyweds shared their first kiss as husband and wife atop their horses, with the majestic Sonoran Desert as their witness. The setting sun painted the sky in brilliant shades of orange, pink, and blue, casting a warm glow over the ceremony that seemed to bless their union.
The horses, perfectly attuned to the significance of the moment, stood quietly as Markus and Mirella sealed their commitment to each other. It was as if these magnificent creatures understood they were part of something extraordinary – an intimate celebration of love that bridged continents and cultures.

Following the ceremony, we took advantage of the golden hour light for portraits that captured their joy and connection. We also signed their wedding papers and it was so special. They asked me to sign as one of their witnesses which made me feel even more honored than I already felt.
As we continued the time for portraits, the couple shared more of their love for Arizona and the western aesthetic that they were so drawn to. They told me that they chose Arizona because they recently discovered country music and began to fall in love with it. They wanted to experience something so different from their home in Finland.
As the light began to fade, we captured a few final shots of the couple silhouetted against the purple mountains, their horses standing proud against the twilight sky. The desert air had cooled, and we began to say our goodbyes.
Markus and Mirella offered me so much encouragement and kindness. I teared up just hearing how thankful they were to find someone that made them feel so comfortable and relaxed during their day. That is all I want to hear from every couple that trusts me with their special moments. They even brought chocolates all the way from Finland for each vendor!

After concluding portraits of the couple during blue hour, Markus and Mirella ventured to their dinner back at the ranch head quarters. The evening for them concluded with a private dinner that the two wanted to enjoy alone. They wanted to have this intimate moment together, (no photo coverage took place). As they shared their meal, I went home to edit some sneak peeks from their day so that they could share them with their family the next day! They had kept it a secret from the start.
Their Elopement at White Stallion Ranch in Arizona was a powerful reminder that weddings don’t need to follow any prescribed format. They can be as unique as the couple themselves, incorporating elements that truly reflect their personalities and passions. Markus and Mirella’s celebration showed that sometimes the most meaningful ceremonies are the ones that break from tradition while still honoring the essence of what matters most – the love between two people.
White Stallion Ranch proved to be the perfect venue for their vision. The staff had helped coordinate every detail, from selecting the perfect horses for the ceremony to ensuring the trails were cleared for our sunset ride. The ranch’s authentic Western atmosphere added another layer of magic to their international love story.
Looking back on this elopement, I’m struck by how perfectly every element came together – the majesty of the horses, the beauty of the desert, and most importantly, the pure love between Markus and Mirella. Their wedding day proved that when you stay true to your vision and follow your heart, magic happens. I hope that their story will inspire other couples to create ceremonies that reflect their unique journey and passions, whether that means saying “I do” on horseback or finding their own special way to celebrate their love. I love these kinds of elopements and will always have the heart to photograph them.
