I have been photographing humans the past 1.5 years. I love my job so much but the funny thing is, it doesn’t even feel like one. When it comes down to it, any photographer can send good photos, but I want to do more than that. I want you to be able to leave your heart and soul wide open so I can capture those intimate, and authentic moments.
Best tips for planning your Superstition Mountains photoshoot from an Arizona photographer
If you’re recently engaged or just dreaming of a romantic photoshoot with your person, let me introduce you to one of the most magical places in Arizona—the Superstition Mountains. Located just outside of Phoenix, this rugged mountain range offers some of the most jaw-dropping desert scenery in the Southwest. As an Arizona engagement photographer, I can confidently say this is one of the best places to capture real love stories.
Whether you’re planning a surprise proposal, an adventurous engagement session, or just want updated couples photos that feel like you, here are my top tips and recommendations to make the most of your session at the Superstitions.
First off, let’s talk about why this location is so popular—and for good reason. The Superstition Mountains offer a perfect blend of bold desert landscapes, golden hour magic, and pure Arizona vibes. You’ll find sweeping views, towering saguaro cacti, weathered rock formations, and wide-open skies. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t need much help to look stunning—it just does.
For couples who love nature, adventure, and want something a little more epic than your average park session, this location is a dream. And as an Arizona couples photographer, I know how to scout the best spots for the most photogenic light, backdrops, and privacy.

Let’s talk about timing. Arizona is known for its heat, so if you’re planning a session in the Superstitions, the best time to shoot is September through April. The weather is cooler, the light is softer, and the sunsets are beautiful.
Summer sessions are possible, but I always recommend shooting at sunrise to beat the heat and the crowds. Sunrise light is just as magical and adds an ethereal glow to your photos since the sun would be rising behind the mountain peak.
This might be the most important tip I can give: schedule your session around golden hour. This is the window of time about 60–90 minutes before sunset. It gives us the warm, soft light that flatters skin tones, enhances the desert landscape, and creates that dreamy, romantic glow.
The Superstitions are already stunning—but pair them with golden hour light and it’s pure magic. As an experienced Arizona engagement photographer, I time sessions down to the minute so we’re in the perfect spots when the light is just right.
While golden hour photos here are some of my favorites, the backlit times in the early mornings are also beautiful. There would be no harsh sun in your face, just the dreamy backlit look as the sun rises over the mountains.

Choosing outfits for your engagement or couples session can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. The key is to wear something that feels like you, but elevated.
I also send every couple my exclusive style guide after booking, with outfit inspo and tips for coordinating your look without being too matchy-matchy.
When you’re shooting in a rugged, wild place like the Superstitions, being prepared is key. Here are a few things I always recommend couples bring:
Bonus points if you bring your pup, a guitar, a picnic, or anything personal that adds to the vibe!
The Superstition Mountains cover a large area, so choosing the right spot can make a big difference in your experience. A few of my favorite places for couples and engagement photos include:
When we start planning your session, I’ll help guide you based on your style, how much hiking you’re up for, and the kind of experience you want.

Here’s the thing: I don’t want your engagement session to feel like a photoshoot. I want it to feel like a fun adventure with your favorite person—something you’ll remember not just because of the pictures, but because of the memories we create in the process.
Whether you’re sharing laughs in the car, snuggling under the stars, or popping champagne after a sunset kiss, I’ll be there to capture it all in an authentic, natural way.
As your Arizona couples photographer, I specialize in creating relaxed, playful, and romantic sessions where you can just be you.
Do we need a permit to shoot there?
Lost Dutchman does not require a pass for photography unless it is for a wedding! There is a park fee entree unless if you have the Arizona Annual Trails Pass. Don’t stress—I’ll help you with all the details and paperwork if needed.
Can we bring our dog?
Absolutely! The Superstitions are dog-friendly (just keep them leashed), and I love when couples include their pets.
What if we’re awkward in front of the camera?
You’re not alone—almost every couple says this before our session. I guide you through everything with fun prompts, natural movement, and zero pressure. By the end, you’ll feel like pros.

If you’re dreaming of epic engagement photos, cozy desert moments, and a photo session that feels like an adventure, I’d love to be your Arizona engagement photographer.
